Gone are the days when you can call ahead before arriving some place and reserve an apartment to stay in. Gone are the days when you can simply walk into the managers office and say, “Hey I need a place” and with the signing of a paper and a shake of the hand and your good word you’re in. Gone are the days when all you had to do was tell so and so’s dad or uncle or cousin who has known you since birth that you need a place to stay and through the pulling of strings, in less than a week you had a place. I guess it really is true. We’re not in Mayberry anymore.
Our home life right now consists of 4 of us in one motel room at the rate of over 800 a month. Lisa, her two sons, and myself. (And of course our newest member of the family, Miss Kitty.) We are all here in one room and yes, things are a bit crowded from time to time. With all 4 of us in one motel room privacy and intimacy is non-existant. Lisa and I have gone out on occasion to a place called Greenhorn Park where it’s quiet and peaceful. We have prayed there, talked there, and just enjoyed the beauty of God’s creation. But the majority of our time is spent here in this room. I have obtained a part time job, (3 to 3 1/2 hours a day at $7.75 an hour) helping an elderly lady work on cleaning and organizing her house as she is having it remodeled. It’s not a lot but it’s something. I am also in the process of working on setting up singing engagements with the churches in our town and the surrounding areas. Lisa is beginning to give crochet lessons and making blankets and cross necklaces.
We have applied for an apartment in three different locations but I believe the Lord is steering us to one particular place. But as always there are start up costs, (deposits and such) that we will need to pay. From my estimation it will take somewhere in the area of 800 to 1,000 dollars to get into this apartment but after that the rent is according to income. The hard part is the timing. We would need the money on the day the apartment is available. I would love to have about 1,000 dollars stashed away, waiting for the day an apartment comes available. I would hate it if one were to open up, but we have no money to pay for it. They would just move on to the next person, and we would have to wait who knows how long for another one to open. The neatest thing about these apartments is, they pay for the gas, garbage, water, and even internet service. All we would have to pay is our rent and electricity. They use their waiting list as a back up but if you have applied for an apartment and one comes available and you happen to call or walk in and ask if one is opened, you can have it, no matter where you might be on the waiting list. So we are calling them about twice a week to check the status.
So that’s pretty much how home life is right now. We are praying for an apartment to open and for the money to be there when it does. At the same time we are still having to pay over 800 dollars a month to stay here as well. It’s just one more chance to trust the Lord to provide. It’s a real walk of faith.
